Guest Anonymous
ok heres a on going problem that im having timing cant get it i og tthe chai dead on checked it 4 times(PITA) now heres the prob. Backfires through the carbs&exhaust, surges, spits and sputers, well not idel and its driving me crazy. a Guy told me that the diz shaft has to be sitting at 1:00&&7:00 wich made the contact on the roter point toward the trans. Now the only way that the car would run is when i moved the #1plug wire to the #3 spot on the diz cap and it runs like crap! While running i start pulling plug wires only 2 of them did what it is supposed to (made the car start to die)the rest had no efect the car kept running (strange) i am not a very good mechanic and i need help. (i dont think that i should of had to move the wire order on the diz cap) Thanks for the help guys
Guest 1320the260
check your firing order. that could be a BIG problem right there. have you recently replaced your plugs, wires, cap and rotor? my car was running pretty shitty then i replaced the plugs and wires (they were well over a few years old! the previous owner never changed them and he owned the car for a good 2+ years) my car runs ALOT better now. the only thing i can think of is that your firing order is totally off or that your cap/rotor are bad. try changing your fuel filter as well just to get it done. basically if you haven't done a major tune up recently, DO ONE. and if you HAVE then get the correct firing order, that should help... Guest 1320the260
oh another thing, could you have placed the cap on backwards or something?

Guest Venture-Z
I say firing order as well. I just rebuilt my motor and when I tried to start it it would kick over and then backfire hard out of the carb. It turned out that the book I used had bad info and my 5 and 6 wires where swapped. That one had me stumped for almost two days.
Guest Venture-Z
I just remembered, I tried the "move the wires around the distributer" thing as well, but you shouldn't have too. I even went so far as to pull the oil pump and advance the gear one tooth. It started to run once it had fouled the plugs, but only with a ton of advance, It ran really rough and sputtered out the pipe. I checked for wet plugs and swapped the wires to them. I put in clean plugs, and it fired right up. Of course then I had to pull the oil pump and put the gear back where it was supposed to be.LOL Make sure its on the compression stroke when you put it to TDC. The rotor should point at the #1 terminal. Use a timing light and time it to about 7 or 8 deg adv with the vacume adv disconnected. Make sure to plug the hose so you don't have a vacume leak into the intake.
Guest Anonymous
The #1 termanel is that at 7:00 on the diz cap right? thanks that is pretty much the same problem that i am having now
Guest Venture-Z
It really dosen't matter, witchever one has the wire that goes to your #1 spark plug. Just continue your firing order from there.
