Guest Your Car is Slow
Ok...I dunno jack squat about painting...so no funny jokes ok? Basically I have an excellent condition 240z with a pretty darn good paintjob. Problem is...I really abhore the orange/reddish color its painted. There are a few dings...and a few chips here and there. as well as a spot of rust on the drivers side rocker panel that I need to attend to. Now from the start this car was purchased to become a streetrod...and I want the car to be black Now....given the condition of the current paint (unknown clearcoat)....would it be possible to prime over that and simply paint black? Or does it have to be sanded...stripped...primered..then painted again?
Mike kZ
Black is the hardest color to paint a car. If the body work is not perfect you will see every wave, dip, wrinkle. If your car has seen many paint jobs over the years (stacked up) , you will need to strip it. If there are only one or two layers, and you know that the work under it is good, you could spray a build up primer, and start block sanding. Then guide coat, then block sand, and continue until it's straight. Then it's paint time. Are you planing on doing this yourself?
Guest Your Car is Slow
Eh..that depended on the work involved. For a car thats only going to see the road one night a week to race....work/money on a paintjob is way down at the bottom of the list

Sumo
Hi Racer, just wanted to say hi and thanks for your posts about paint prep. It helps with prepping the used cars we try to sell before bringing it to Mayucko! (Maaco) They want to charge $60-$80 just to sand the bad parts of the clearcoat of the top of the car. We now do it ourselves with the 400 grit wet sand. 8)
