I am not too heavy into drag racing, more so into road track, and gt racing. would a v-8 be the way to go? how will the heavy engine effect handling? I wold prefer FI, and the better the fuel economy the better.what are the advantages of a v-8 over a hopped up turbo?

WELCOME to this site. There are not too many around these parts that would not recomend a V8 for a ZX conversion. The chevy V8 is reportedly about 150 #'s less than the 6 and sets lower and further back in the most popular conversion (JTR) which gives a 51 to 49 weight ratio. Performance is based upon how far you want to go and how much you want to spend or work!!!! There are members with V8's in their Zx's and can tell you more. Just ask the specific questions.I stumbled across this site and found out how easy it was to swap a 350 cubic inch SBC in a Datsun and get all kinds of help from these guys on all my dumb questions. I made my own mounts and doing all my modifications etc. and I get assistance about 24 hours a day from some sharp folks. It is an education! a good place to buy ,sell and meet new friends.

ZX conversions can be performed with all kinds of engine options. Do you want to build a road race car or economy car? A ZX V8 with aluminum heads and intake is slightly heavier in front, maybe 50#. Not a noticeable change in handling. The biggest advantage of a V8 over a turbo is the broad torque curve. The next best advantage is that you can build high horsepower for relatively few dollars that will run for many many miles without melting things down. Of course, you could start talking GN V6's.... but that is another forum!

Just start with defining the project first, then collect information and the parts.

An LT1 would suit your goals quite nicely but theirs lots of other setups that could work as well. It's not 'heavy', my V8 280ZX is lighter than stock with a rear weight BIAS and is not stripped at all. I actually added power windows as it was something I'd always wanted coollook.gif

V8's are nice IMO as it's cheap power and they're very resilient to being out of tune in my experience and they still spit out lots of power even then  . The Lt1 is naturally well tuned out of the box etc.......

I do lapping days etc in my ZX and quite enjoy any higher speed events I can enjoy :D

search and bring on the q's
