Guest Anonymous
Here is my free advice: Pay perticular attention to Grumpy Vettes posts. He has posted some really good buys on crate engines that were hot. If you are going the junkyard route be familiar with GM codes to understand what you are looking at.For example I was given this 350 SBC motor at a garage sale which had been rebuilt by some unknown business and none of the casting #'s match and the cylinder heads are not even closely matched. You also may wind up with a motor that has been machined to the maximum and can't take another rebuild which is probably the case with my garage sale motor. You may be able to buy a performance crate engine for a lot less than you can "build" one. Look at running cars thru the "nickle ads" and you might find the whole car cheaper than you can buy a junkyard motor. My slightly warmed project motor comes from a running car.If you got the money ,buy a good hot crate motor from a reputable builder. If you have not got it, keep looking at alternatives.
DavyZ
Buying a crate motor saves you TIME, which is what you want to be spending driving your V8Z, right? Unless you are 'cash free' like me you might actually save yourself valuable time and mistakes buying a complete engine. FWIW, if you have the spare change to buy a complete motor from a builder with a good rep, you'll be miles ahead. Use the search function and look up some of Grumpy's posts on crate motor suppliers/builders---great info. Davy
