V6 200sx question

Some 87-89 (I think) 200sx's came with vg30de's, and I read somewhere that they had all the same drivetrain and underpinnings as 300zx's of the same years. Does anyone know if this is true? And if it is, that's friggin awsome, just swap in a vg30dett and you have a 2,000 something pound 300zx.

They had SOHC vg30e's and had a similar subframe to the s13 240sx's. That's about all I know about them. It would be nice to aquire the motor mounts and drop a TwinTurbo VG into a silvia, but they don't have much to offer for the Z enthusiest.

I'd heard the chassis was very similar to the Z31 300ZX and that they had the single cam VG30E. The S13 as I understand it has a rather sophisticated multilink rear suspension (i.e. upper and lower links) while the Z31 (and I'd assume the S12 200SX as well) has a single semi-trailing arm rear suspension. Check this out:

See the suspension section on the left. See their main page as well...they have a forum too apparently, that could be the best way to find out more about those cars.

but they don't have much to offer for the Z enthusiest.

Not sure what you mean by that, if I didn't have my Z I'd be in the market for any of the S12, S13 or S14 series cars! I'd probably get an S13 now while they're cheap but still have huuuuuge aftermerket support (suspension-wise), and nearly bolt-in JDM engines are plentiful and cheap as well. I actually got about halfway through convincing myself to buy an S12 Turbo about six months ago...they're so neat, and look a lot like an AE86 :-D but I could stay true to the Nissan brand.

The motor mounts are supposed to be interchangable between the S12 and S13, so anything that went into the S12, like the CA, VG, or FJ's, should bolt straight into a 240SX/Silvia. With the exception of the fj20, you really wouldn't have to source any parts for the swap from Japan/Australia.

I don't know anything about similarities between the S12 and Z31, but when I say "Z enthusiest", I Mean 240-280Z(X), and I don't see what the S12 has to offer as far as parts go; a nice 4.11 rearend, but that's about it.

An S12 turbo would be nice, though. I'd like to swap that motor, with a twin cam head, into an S13 with an S14/15 suspension and some widebody work...

Wait a minute--this is HybridZ--what the hell am I talking about this Silvia crap for!!! :?

Oh haha I thought you were putting the car down in some way compared to a Z...like Z snobbery...completely missed your point. I see it now and you are probably right, there are very few parts for S12's that a Zcar owner would be interested in. In fact I am sure the Z31 has better aftermarket support, at least here in the US, I've never seen a part advertised for an S12. (haven't looked either I guess...)

I was just trying to say that they're not bad cars, in fact I'd like to have one perhaps someday.

I found an S12 in a junkyard awhile back. I was thinking about pulling the drive train; it was the turbo model. I've found just about everything for the ca18(d)et from JUN, HKS, and Nismo. If I could speak Japanese, the tuning potential of that motor would rival the sr20.

By the way, when I said there's not much to offer the Z crowd, I forgot that I've read that the CA supposedly bolts up to the L series tranny somehow. Not sure, though, if that's the Z car L series or the 510.

Betty has gone too far. Killing is wrong. And bad. There should be a new, stronger word for killing, like bad-wrong.. or.. badong. Yes, killing is badong...

From this moment, I shall stand for the opposite of killing: Goonodab
