Z Driver
My 1980 280ZX is in need of new bumpers. I went to a local junkyard to find new bumpers and found two 280ZX’s. Unfortunately the both were from the ’81-83 generation which have a different bumper style. These ZX’s have bumpers that have no chrome and wrap around the car until the wheels. I need to know if I can take the covers off of one of these ZX’s and replace my current bumpers without changing the reinforcement. I have the older style that wrap around only halfway with the chrome inserts. I am having a hard time finding any bumpers in my area so I am desperate. Has anyone done this swap before? Guest greimann
You can interchange the bumpers. The easiest way would be to unbolt them from the body of the car, or where the absorbers attach. I wouldn't try to just exchange covers. The tricky part is adapting the extensions that tie into the wheel wells. The later body style uses a bracket that is attached to the fender through a large hole that the earlier body does not have, so you will either have to hole saw the large hole or make your own custom mount.
