Guest mtj71Z
just for reference : 71 240z with 280z engine, triple webers hi, i recently rewired my car.....but i went to start it and got nothing, so i sprayed some starter fluid in the carbs and it did start for a second or 2, so i took off some of the fuel hoses, and there is no gas in the hose. so i sucked gas up to the fuel filter and left some clear tubing on and tried to start it and still no fuel is being sucked in. is this a problem with the mechanical fuel pump? it worked when i started to re-wire, now...nothing. also near the gas tank there is a green wire sticking out, the wiring diagram said this is a wire to the fuel pump. so i took a wire fromt he ignition and gave that power whenever the key is turned to "on". im not sure if it works because i cannot hear it running - but i know fuel is not getting ot the carbs due to one or both of these. can someone tell me how to test these pumps to figure out why imnot getting gas? thank you for any help. mike

A. G. Olphart
Mike, I don't have a 71, but have crawled under a few later cars... they all had an obvious pump with rubber hoses back by the gas tank on the passenger side. If you can't see one, it ain't got it. Your mechanical pump is most likely faulty, although it is normal to be able to suck through it. (Two flat flapper valves, both of which get pulled off their seat by your suction). If you can pull fuel through, the pump should too. If you had a broken line somewhere you would have sucked air (altough a leaky one feeds in bubbles and acts a little like a plugged fuel filter: Both problems can cause starvation under load). Guest mtj71Z
no, i could not suck gas through.........
A. G. Olphart
Oops ... Should read these things more carefully. "A green wire sticking out" in back says it wasn't hooked to a pump. Ergo, no electric pump, just provisions for one. Did you get gas through the filter?
Guest mtj71Z
yeah i can physically suck gas through the filter. when i meant sticking out of the back i mean stickign out up near the wires for the fuel gauge sender unit, out of the floor of the car near the rear tail lights. i tried to follow that wire, but the gas tank is in the way, cant see where it goes. thanks for your help.
