Guest FordMotherFocus
Day 1: Bought my car. Day 2: When I would turn the key to start it up it would turn over a couple of times and then make a really loud cracking sound, and eventually it would start. Day 3: I turn the key and the sound would happen more frequently and eventually all it makes when I turn the key is this sound. Could the starter have gone out? Could the gears not be engaging with the flywheel all the way? I'm stumped.
Guest Anonymous
Sounds like a starter solenoid which makes a loud clicking sound when the starter gear is trying to engage the fly wheel teeth. The solenoid drives or shoves the starter gear to engage the flywheel teeth to turn the engine to start. Clean all the electrical terminals on the starter including the battery terminals to make sure there is good elctrical connectiion to the starter. Try to start again. If same.. Take the car out of gear with the key on and jump the small starter wire on top of the starter to the big wire coming from the battery to the starter with a srew driver or wrench and see what happens. If it still clicks, then it is a sticking solenoid. When take the starter off examine both the fly wheel teeth and the starter drive teeth for wear and breakage. Guest FordMotherFocus
this is not just a loud clicking sound, it is a loud cracking or grinding sound. metal on metal or something. Like its not engaging on the flywheel all the way, just half way or something. Im in the process of taking off the starter but haven't had alot of time to look at it. Guest FordMotherFocus
Got the starter off. The teeth are a little worn, but looks to me to be alright. I can still always get it to start once after redoing the reinstallation. Its such a biatch. Can anyone help before I take it in on Sunday and drop a couple ounces out of my wallet.? Guest greimann
Is it shimmed properly? Some starters need to be shimmed for proper clearance of the gear mesh. It is usually a real PITA to inspect the clearance. Just try a couple shims and see if that works.
