head porting question

It is my understanding that you typically match the intake ports but not the exhaust. You want the exhaust gasses to see a jump into a larger area when leaving the head and the rim of the head port makes it more difficult for the exhaust gasses to flow back into the head during cam overlap making for a denser fuel mixture.

 

When ported the exhaust ports are cleaned up and polished smooth as possible, intake ports are matched, cleaned up and smoothed but not polished.

 

This is of course a simplified version of what is done in head porting but is an example of what can be done at home that will help flow. Here's a pretty good link
