Guest jjohart
I JUST GOT AN 83 280ZX TURBO, AND I NOTICED THE CLUTCH SEEMS TO MAKE A VIBRATION WHEN I GO FROM 4TH TO 3RD GEAR, AND SOMETIMES ON LAUNCH IN FIRST. THE SELLER SAID HE'D NOT NOTICED CLUTCH PROBLEMS. IF I BLIP THE THROTTLE BETWEEN 4TH AND 3RD GEAR, I DON'T NOTICE THE SHUDDER. IS THIS A CLUTCH ISSUE (SLIPPAGE), OR SYCNCRHO. ALSO, I'M THINKING OF INTERCOOLING AND OTHER UPGRADES ON THIS CAR. IF I NEED A NEW CLUTCH, OR GEARS, AM I BETTER OFF WITH PERFORMANCE CLUTCH...WHAT DIFFERENT RATIO NUMBERS ARE BETTER IN GEARS 1-4 FOR BETTER PICK UP? Guest freakypainter
clutch chatter is most commonly caused by imperfections on the surface of the flywheel. The flywheel is much like a brake rotor, it will warp , distort and heat crack, all of which result in a vibration while engaging, much like your brakes vibrate while stopping when the rotors are warped. The solution is to have the flywheel resurfaced and install a new clutch.
