Guest Anonymous
Was wondering if anyone in the group has any experience w/ aftermarket performance PROMS. I'm running a '91 305 w/ TBI, and recently ran into the speed limiter in the stock chip. (Can't have that!! LOL). Any mfg. recommendations would be appreciated. Guest Drewz
Tbi. is easy and not so easy to adjust. Is the engine still stock? Any mods at all? The chips you can buy usually just lockup the converter earlier, turn the fan on sooner and a couple of other useless things. I have opened one of these chips with my Gm chip burning program and the chip was a farce. There may be some good chips out there but there are a lot of cheap ones. You can alter your fuel, spark curve, map readings, spark intensity and so on. It is very involved but perfect for fine tuning if the time is taken to research it. I am running a dual Tbi. on a tunnel rammed 350. Be careful with cam selection as a lack of vacume can reak havek with your tuning approach. If you are serious you can make unreal amounts of power with out constant upgrades like a few Tpi. setups. The system was designed by a head honcho Gm guy up here. Let me know if you are serious as I can hook you up with some reading material. I am planning on over 500 horse in the next year or so and I will just have to tune in my Tbi's as I go. Just my experience and opinions here. ------------------ Drewz
Guest Anonymous
Wow Drew, sounds like you're WAY ahead of me!! What I have is a bone stock Camaro drivetrain right now, but would like to modify in the future. Immediately I just want to get around any speed or rev. limiters in the stock prom. I have somewhat researched outfits like Jet and Hypertech and wondered if there were other options. I do know of an outfit somewhat locally that burns custom proms, but thought I'd wait until mods. were done to go that route. Thanks for your reply! Guest Drewz
In my opinion custom is a good way to go if they know what they are doing. If not they can easily overfuel your motor and wash the cylinders and bang no engine. The pessure regulator is also a good place to start. A pound or two is easy hp. Start with smaller changes and move up. This Tbi. is easily swapped to a 350 with almost no chip work. Find out if they know what is what. Any idiot can buy the product but it takes skill and knowledge to be truly dangerous. A good shop should be willing to educate you and show you where the money is going and why. ------------------ Drewz
Guest RON JONES
When I got my enclosed trailer,my truck had a hard time geting up some of the long hills on the highway. It would downshift and screem its way up the hills in 2nd gear.I put in a FLOWMASTER cat back system,a high flow cat and a JET chip.I think the truck had around 165,000 to 170,000 miles on it when I put these parts on.WHAT A DIFFERENCE!The truck goes up the hills no problem now,I was amazed at the difference. The truck has close to 190,000 on it now.I have a new 383 for it,but I have to find the time to put it in.I don,t know if the chip made a big diffrence or the exaust or the combo, but it sure is making more power. clint78z
Wow DrewZ dual TBI is a nice setup which is cheap and effective . I suppose you have seen the DIY EFI list, tons of GM info . Later on I want to try the dual TBI on my dads Bronco 400 . Alot of chips suck, they bump spark timing up in a couple of places . Look to a fuel injection specialty shop and give them your specs . Guest mattrp
Now I know a little about the tbi, tpi, etc but have never worked with them, and dont know what exactly a dual tpi setup is. Anyone got pictures? What car did it come from. I have been thinking about the fuel injection route and you claim this is cheap, but I've been worried about all these systems which are only good to 300 horses. This sounds like a killer option, give me some more info. Maybe next summer after college lets out I'll slap one on. I want the horses, but I want a car that runs perfect too. Guest Drewz
My system is a dual TBI. not to be confused with the more popular TPI. It was created not bought from a book. The guru I have to thank is a GM higher up teaching tech. from Saskatoon. He got bored and tired of expensive upgrades for his TPI's and built this beauty. The throttle bodies are readily available as is the other parts to build one. All the connectors are factory GM as is all the sensors. Cheap and the ability to make a lot of Hp. without a lot of upgrades are the reasons I went with it. One chip I have is for fuel mileage and the other is for pulling my gotch out of my throat.(lol) Photos and hopefully my page will be avail. very soon. Dramatic is what I got and what I was after. I will post pics. when they are available. This will prove I am not full of crap like a few imposters I have met in my past travels. It is a somewhat hard road but I sure can get to the end of it quickly now!!! ------------------ Drewz
