Guest bastaad525
Okay... I need a straight answer on this one, I keep getting different answers. Is it normal for the amp gauge in a 240 to rise and fall with the engine revs? I was under the impression that the volt meter was supposed to keep it pretty much still. Even before yesterday, before my alternator just went out (AGAIN!!!) and the needle was going all crazy... for the most part it would stay very stable, at just above the mid point on the gauge. Well today I just went down and bought a rebuilt alternator and a new voltage regulator ('72 240's have external regulators... the one on my car was the original one from the factory... 30 some years old... I had a feeling it was bad and thus fryed two alternators in a 1 month period) and installed them and went for a drive. At idle, the needle stays right where it should, right above the mid point mark, with headlights on or off. But as I rev the motor up it will rise, until it's about 3/4 of the way up from the midway mark, to the +45 amp mark, or about 2-3 needle widths from the +45 mark, which seems a little too high to me. So... is this normal for a 240, with a new alternator and volt regulator, or what? It only started moving at all after I put the turbo motor and efi in there.... Also... is it typical for rebuilt alternators to make a slight tapping noise when they are first fired up? The guy at auto zone says sometimes the brushes need to wear in or something.... I've gotten so used to posting in the Turbo section I kinda forget sometimes. anywho... why no reply thusfar??? Surely someone here has a 240z with a stock amp gauge??? Guest zfan
I have never had my amp gauge do that, it will drop slightly when I put on my driving lights or when I put the Taurus two speed fan on high which I very rarely do anyway. The clicking noise I have never heard in any of my alt's but I guess it is possible? Mike
Guest bastaad525
It has stabled out a bit... now it will move between the midway point, up to about 1/3 between the midpoint and the +45. It's much more STEADY now though, as far as, not being all twitchy the way it was before changing the voltage regulator. It hits it's high point now by about 1500rpm and will stay there no matter how much higher I rev from that.... it's like it's trying to tell me my car is idling too slow Oh by the way the clicking noise did fade.
