Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I just rebuilt my SU's and put them back on the car and it runs great. However, I have noticed that the top RPM just doesnt pull very much at all compared to the lower RPM (especially now that the carbs are rebuilt and running good). I am not sure if this is a fuel delivery problem, but I suspect it might be related to something I found with the distributor today. On the distributor, where the vacuum advance diaphragm connects, I noticed that it is not fully inserted. It looks like it is supposed to be inserted all the way in, then a screw goes through a hole into the diaphragm to hold it in place. On mine, the diaphragm is just barely into it's mount, and the screw is on the outside of the little spout off of the distributor housing and just kind of pinches to the edge. (I would take a pic but I cant find my camera right now). I tried putting the diaphragm in all the way and screwing it in as I assumed would be correct, and the car barely ran, and made a huge backfire as soon as I moved the throttle. I cant imagine that this is the correct install with the diaphragm just barely inserted, could this be a bad module that the previous owner mickey-rigged to get to work? Wrong diaphragm? Distributor not installed correctly?
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Follow-up question: Does anyone know how to install the distributor if it is taken out and no mark was made to indicate the angle that the rotor should be at? I want to take the distributor out and put it back in and make sure it is correct. (There is just no trusting the fellow that had the car before me ) I am thinking it may be off by a tooth. Ok, nevermind that actually. I just found a walk-through nestled in my Chilton manual for how to line it up with piston 1 at TDC etc. etc. If anyone knows what might be up with this vacuum diaphragm I sure am stumped! Guest oldZguy
I'd say it needs to be installed in all the way. The reason it probably didn't run right when you did install it that way the breaker plate moved and changed your timing. Install it all the way in and reset your timing and everything should be fine.
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I also found out that the vacuum line was hooked up wrong. It was hooked up to the air filter box when it apparently is supposed to be connected to the little vacuum tap between the front carb and the manifold. (Makes sense). Boy did the car come alive! I will insert the diaphragm all the way now and try re-adjusting the timing if need be.
