I want to build a LT1-T56 240z

I have been checking out this site for a while and just want to clear some things up right now. Right now I have a 1991 Z28 which is not nearly fast enough for me. So I have been contemplating doing this swap. How much harder is it to do a LT1 swap compared to a carburated engine swap? How much is a LT1 T56 swap going to cost me from buying the car to getting it running and drivable? How long will it take me to do the swap from pulling the old engine to getting the car on the road? I just want to see what you guys think to make sure that I am up to this or if I should rethink the swap or scrap the whole idea and just buy a LT1 camaro or firebird.

" How much harder is it to do a LT1 swap compared to a carburated engine swap?"

How familiar are you with the LT1 wiring or mods required? Some of the mechanical is easier IMO as the motor is done with most all accessories with it and great hood clearance to boot. The wiring I haven't seen documented much, my dad's wiring was already somewhat modified and he took it further.

Comes down to how resourceful you are, your budget, and your patience as well as the quantity of work you plan to do yourself (and is that time free?)

See above.......some guys do sbc swaps in a few weeks and others a few years....

Depends on your goals/desires etc......you haven't passed too much on in that respect...more info required....I've already commented on Lt1's in many threads. The site's search function is very good.

Casey,

The research you need to do:

1) Use the search function on this forum to look up and read the posts abut LT1 swaps.

2) Buy and read the JTR manual; you'll need the TPI/TBI manual and the Datsun V8 conversion manual.

3) Consider TIME to be the biggest issue if you already have a Z car and the engine & tranny + $5000 extra laying around for the swap.

How "nice" you want everything to be: sky is the limit. Used LT1 & T56 from junkyards: $3000-$6000 (am I close LT1 guys?) Then there is the Z car. You can spend umpteen dollars on making that the ultimate in performance. 240Zs run in the $2000 to $5000 for nice ones, but make no mistake, they are available for less and for more.

Just do a ton of reading on this site and others, and you'll have a very good idea about if you want to do this or not.

Furthermore, keep in mind that if you ever get discouraged, that the Z weighs about 1000lbs less than the Camaro, and goes faster with the same motor. Now modify that motor and almost NOTHING can catch you!
