Guest Boyd
Here's the problem: Whenever I touch the brakes and the brake lights come on, the amp meter pegs out negative and the car starts sputtering or dies. Sometimes I can rev the engine a bit and the amp meter will return to normal operating range. Even worse is that I am unable to turn on my headlights, otherwise the same happens, but kills the engine near immediately. The wiring in the car is nearly original. Only few modifications were made by me, mainly engine sensors, etc. (Megasquirt). The car had similar problems even before this, so I am just thinking it is the age of the wiring instead of the modifications I made. Question is: Can I replace the short wires on the fusible links with regular wire and terminals? The wire I am looking at using is 18ga I believe. Conclusion: I have been looking/searching through the forums and haven't gotten a clear answer as to whether using regular wire and terminals will cause any issues. I hope to get this resolved soon or at least a temporary fix. I need to drive the car about 150 miles to a shop to install my new Illumina kit and Walbro fuel pump. Sumo
NO! you risk burning out whatever the fusible links were designed to protect in the first place. Using regular wire will just make them red hot and burn out whatevers next in line. You can use fusible links of the same value and splice them in but dont use regular wire. 8)
Guest Boyd
Any thoughts on where I can find the wire? I think the boxes/links themselves are OK. They are not brittle or damaged. The wires however have been pulled on and are damaged. Thanks!
Guest dawg95_2000
I had a couple really thin wires connecting my fusible links that the owner before me had put on. My car would not start the every morning after the night i would come home from work. When i would run my headlights the wires would get so hot and drain my battery so that the alternator could not recharge it quick enough, or something like that. But what i did was run to autozone and get some 12 gauge wire and a pack of female quick disconnectors meant for 12 gauge wires. I replaced all of the wires and my car has started up every time. Hope it'll work for u.
