Guest ac260z
Ok, so my "purist" mind is beggining to change. Now my question is what is the most cost efective way to go w/a V8? I think I would like to go with a Chevy motor, but which one? I want to run about 350hp and 350 ft lb of torque give or take. Should I find a motor out of the junkyard and build it (defifinetely more satisfying for the sole) or buy a crate motor somehwere? How difficult is the wiring for EFI, my car is currently running dual su's. Which stick shift tranny will hold the power, do I need to change my wheel size, whats up with the "need" for aluminum contol arms? So many questions so little cash. Thanks for all of the information. BTW I appreciate how open minded and LITERATE the members of this site are. Guest Anonymous
On a budget??? Find a good used 350 Small Block Chevy, 4 speed GM automatic (2004R or 700R4)...ADD a 600 CFM 4 barrell carb, aluminum dual plane manifold...1.94/1.50 cylinder heads.. mild cam (442/465 lift) block hugger headers.Add Radiator and GM drive shaft. You can find all the above used except for the cam and lifters which can be had for $72.00 out of Summit.Do not buy cams or undershorts used! My formula for the financially and mechanically challenged as I am. Research study and look. I am finding bargains at Garage sales.
DavyZ
Unless you are looking to put a car together in a hurry, patience is a virtue when doing a swap. Please buy the JTR manual first and then read it through several times before jumping off into the world of swaps. If you already have a Z car, you are miles ahead. Tuning V8 engines is easy; tuning them for utmost performance cheaply is not. I suggest reading many old posts from this website and getting a good feel while digesting the information at hand. There is great literature available at any bookstore. Send for a free Summit Racing catalog if you have not already done so. As far as what engine to buy, if you buy used, it is a crapshoot; if you buy new, it is budget constrained. That said, you have to figure out what you want (350 hp & 350 lb/ft torque) is easy for a Chevy, even a relatively stock one. Buy from friends, buy from ebay, look for deals, but be wise when handing over the cash. Good luck! Davy
