Guest 240hybrid
I've always wondered if there was a way to repair the textured vinyl (spelling?) with do it youself kit on seats and door panels myself. I thought this might be possible by taking a extra piece (from a door thats trashed) of the vinyl and put some vaseline or spray oil on the back of it. Then mix up the paste to the color you want and apply it to the tear, and take that extra piece with the vaseline/oil (spray cooking oil) on the back and put the back side onto the repaired area while still wet. Putting the backside of the extra piece onto the repair will cause the texture to appear as it should and the vaseline or oil will allow you to pull it away after drying without it sticking. I have never tried this, but thought about it when the time comes. For seats theres a cloth glued to the backside of the textured vinyl so you can't use this method without removing that cloth somehow, but I don't think the door panels have anyting on the back, just the sheet of vinyl. If I am correct about the door panels not having cloth glued to them, you take the texture from the backside as necessary to get the proper pattern. Just using the front (side that people see) will make little ridges in your patch instead of the little wrinkles that I think the back will produce, and cause it to look like leather. I hope that that made sense, it might actually work good

Guest deedee
I have a 83 280zx that I'm restoring. When I started to restore the interior, I had a hard time finding door paneling. So I desided to get creative. I bought some car carpet and did the whole panel. It ended up looking really nice and sporty. deedee 8) [/img]
Guest 240hybrid
Thats not a bad idea deedee....welcome to the board also. I saw a vinyl/leather repair kit that had little textured pads at a local auto parts store, and it seemed to match the door panel very well. Guest gtmattz
Ive been wondering what to do with my doors as well.. when i received the car the door panels had already been taken for another car, so I need to fabricate the whole panel.. I will probably just hit the junkyards and see if i can find some panels that at the very least have the inner carboard piece intact. I also need to find the armrests, the rest of the hardware stayed with the car (door handles/lock knobs/windows cranks). I am pondering covering them with carpet, depends on what I find at the JY, also, has anyone covered the inside of the door panel with sound dampening material? does it cause the panel to stick out too far from the door? TomoHawk
See ifyou can find some thin fiberboard. I dunno where. It's much stiffer than cardboard and would get soggy when the moisture get at it from the back. remember to put on a vapor barrier unde the door panel.,
