Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I do not know much about Vortec heads, and couldnt find much info about original configuration in searching. What type of intake are the vortec heads used with stock? I am thinking of using vortec heads with a TBI setup, so I would just need an intake that a carb could mount on. Is there any reduction in hood clearance typical from using vortec heads? Can vortec heads be used on Gen I engines? Can anyone indicate why vortec heads with a TBI setup would not be a great setup for high-rpm use?
Guest Z-rific
You need a vortec specific intake to bolt up to an older SBC. Look on Edelbrock's website. I think they have at least 2. They also have dimension specs on each of their intakes. I believe they have a performer rpm intake for vortec heads.
Guest AJ78
http://thirdgen.org/techbb2/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41477&highlight=tbi+limited+horsepower+injectors+duty+cycle The concensus on thirdgen.org is that TBI is limited to 350hp at the crank with a 454 TBI unit. Unless your going with one of those 4bbl setups... I've looked at TBI quite a bit, you can do some neat stuff with the stock truck or f-body ecms if you run additional injector drivers. I've got 2 TBI units sitting in my garage that need an engine. Well, a car too. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=prod_detail&catid=2614&pid=9155 I'd start here: http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=catalog_start&catid=
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Ya, I plan to use a 4 bbl 4 injector setup. BTW, anyone know a good source for the 4bbl TBI units other than the Holley ($$) Commander? Did GM ever use a 4bbl setup in a stock application? Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Actually I guess the Holley Commander is a pretty good deal. I found a package for about $1200 and that includes the TBI, ECU, Fuel Pump, Sensors, Wiring, Filters etc.
Guest AJ78
GM never had a 4bbl TBI. You can find some bare units on ebay. Holley ECU's ugh... Check out the PROM section of thirdgen.org for some cool stuff. The main site http://www.diy-efi.org is down right now.
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Ya, I was thinking of getting the info from diy-efi.org, but the problem with that is that GM never made a 4bbl TBI, so there is no stock TBI that I can use in a diy-efi setup. Guest AJ78
Ahhh... but there are driver boards you can get to drive the extra two injectors. It's DIY so if you aren't comfortable with soldering a board then I understand. I think I'm just biased because all the people on diy-efi constantly talk about how gm ecms are better than anything else.
