New member intro & engine combo advice

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Chris and I'm from Perth, Western Australia. I'm a mere 20yo, though have wanted to do a 250GTO replica ever since I saw a small magazine article about `em. Of course, it needs a power-plant, and what better than a 350 Chev? Well, a V12 would be better, but that'd be rather more difficult tongue.gif

I'm a mad car & bike fan in general, and a big American sports fan. I'm a die-hard NHL (Dallas Stars) and NFL (SF 49ers) supporter, and a reasonable MLB (SF Giants) fan too. But that's another story..

Anyway, for my 350-powered 240Z/250GTO, here's what I'm going to plan on using if I can get my project underway:

* stock 350 block

* JE pistons (4.060" dome top)

* Scat cast steel 400cid crank

* Scat forged I-beam rods (6")

* ARP bolts/studs

* Hooker block-hugger headers

* Edelbrock elite valve & air cleaner covers for that Ferrari look

* Edelbrock Torker II manifold

* Holley 700 or 750DP or similar (advice?)

* Crane HI-6 ignition w/ PS-91 coil

Not really sure what else. Can anyone recommend good brands for stuff like bearings, oil pumps, water pumps, timing gear, etc? Flywheel & clutch will hopefully be nice lightweight items.

It'll run on 98RON unleaded petrol (gasoline to most of you), which is I think equivalent to 92MON. Redline will be a meagre 6500rpm, I'd like to see >300hp at the flywheel. Heads and cam.. I've got no idea, give me advice! smile.gif Oh, I have no pollution laws to comply with, and I think the sound levels I have to be under is 95dB(a). :D

Oh.. the gearbox will probably be a 5-speed Toyota Supra (regular or all-alloy, not sure yet). Hopefully some kind of LSD at the back, who knows what ratio!

thanks guys,

Chris

Chris.. Welcome... Everyone has a different opinion on engines. Here is mine. Sounds like you plan to build a 383 stroker,I would go with a Edelbrock 750 CFM carb, Performer RPM manifold and a 234 degree Intake and 244 degree exhaust at .50 duration. Vortec heads. a balanced rotating assembly (pistons .rods , crank.flywheel and damper. Felpro gaskets and Clevite bearings. This should about bankrupt you.

Tomahawk: Thanks for that. smile.gif What would be a good place that has rough prices for that stuff online? summitracing.com or racesearch.com or something like that? I want to focus on low- and mid-range torque, rather than out and out horsepower.

DavyZ: I've got to find a donor car first! smile.gif I want to get the donor car sorted, then a stokc 350 Chev, then get the 250GTO bits, then start thinking of the bits I'd need for the engine..

Howdy Chris,

What about using a stroked 308. I think they are close to the weight of the 302 ford and there is a lot of local info. Those that know say to keep the tourqe below 400 lb/ft for those supra boxes.

Cheers

Doug: Thanks for that.. it seems (over here at least) there's more info on 350s than 308s for some reason. What could I stroke a 308 to easily, anyway?

I've no idea how much torque a motor like what I want will produce.. I guess if it's too much I'll have to use the all-alloy Supra boxes? I think they're rated quite high. Failing that, maybe a Tremec? :( They sound expensive..

I won't be driving particularly hard, or doing drag-racing or anything though..
