Body throttled=snake oil or what?

There's a 60mm throttle body "spacer" kit (apparently the source is a 240SX) apparently for Z Turbos et al, which says it'll raise performance with a host of other mods...what sort of mods might that be? I've heard that these things are snake oil, I had one in an old Golf that didn't seem to do anything but decrease gas mileage! The only sort of reply I've heard is that "they make a difference for racing"...how so?

Thanks

My experience is as follows:

I added a 60mm TB and a new downpipe which eliminated the 90 degree bends (45 degree bends now).

The RW HP when from 183 to 206 at stock boost pressure. Now these measurements were made on different days, on different dynos, so I'm not sure if you can compare them directly. To be honest, I think the downpipe makes most of the difference. There was noticable difference in the seat of the pants for sure. The turbo spools up much faster with the new downlpipe. I would supect that these mods would yeild more gains as the boost is turned up as well.

I'm waiting for my downpipe from the installer at this moment! I can't wait! I'm sure what you said about most of the improvments coming from replacing the stock pipe...I still can't find anything convincing about why a 240SX 60mm spacer kit is worth the time of day/or 0-60 times for that matter :o

Some one mentioned that the 60mm throttle body flows roughly 33% more air than the 50mm stock one. That's quite a bit, especially as the boost is turned up. To give you an idea, the stock B16 (160HP) Honda motor uses throttle bodies from the 58mm to 60mm. Those things aren't even boosted. You should notice a big difference in throttle response too. You may lose a pound of boost or so (those with experience, help me out here), but you should still be making the same power. Just up the boost back to its original level and you'll be putting down more ponies that before

Z-ya, did you port the intake manifold to match the tb inlet? I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I just want to make sure.

Yes, I port matched the intake and exhaust manifolds to the head. The way I look at it, a 50mm TB is good for close to 400HP, and I'm not there yet (maybe 300HP). Right now the 60mm TB is kind of overkill, but it's on there if I can ever take advantage of it.
