Guest Rusty260z
First thing I'd like to say being my first post is hey everybody awesome site and I'm finding myself constantly browing looking for more info. I just bought a 260z and with it a long term project....but a worthwhile one. Its pretty decent other than the rust...which will soon enough be repaired. However, it currently doesn't run. I've used close to a whole can of B12 and surely broke free a ton of nastiness....but still hasn't helped my situation. If I spray starting fluid into each carb it'll start up and run till the starting fluid burns off....which is all of like 3 seconds. Now question is....should I stick with my SU's and I'm guessing rebuild them...or forget them and go with EFI. My long-term plans are an L28et, a good tranny, and I'm still pondering the rear-end as I'd like this car to make road-race/auto-x runs as well as some late night runs through the "1/4" There's gas getting to the carbs and actually keeps sipping away but never gets thrown together with the air in the carbs right...the manual choke on the first carb is stuck so I just zip-tied the butterfly open...also the throttle linkage doesn't seem to do anything for moving the butterflies...now I'm used to seeing V8 carbs like Edelbrock's and Autolite's...but I don't see this being radically different and the throttle not operating the butterfly. I think this is enough for the first post...so fire away with all your thoughts I'm open to anything. OH yeah...and if you're in the Tulsa area...I figure I can learn even better talking to some people in person.
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe those SU's are flat-tops, right? If they are, then rebuilding them is going to be a waste (if you can even find a kit). If I am wrong and they are round tops, rebuild them. You can get the kits for $15 each through most parts stores, or $55 each if you want to give ZTherapy money for the heck of it (to my knowledge, there is NO DIFFERENCE in the kits). The round top SU's will get you some good performance and keep the car running while you prepare for your swap. I have an L28 with round tops and it runs great and fast. If you are ready for your swap, now sounds like a good time! BTW, flat tops look like someone took a soup can and stuck it on the top of the carbs, round tops look similar, but are nice and rounded a little like a bell. Check out http://www.ztherapy.com for more info.
Guest Rusty260z
Ok....I have the horrid flat tops. But I'm nowhere near ready for the swap. I planned on body and chassis first engine swap last. However...I do know of a 78 280z that runs and drives well for 250 bucks....would it be feasible to convert over to EFI and drop in the n/a L28 till I am ready for the et?? I'd like it to be able to drive around under its own power...at least enough to find out if it has any tranny or rear-end problems and to get it up on a trailer for body work. Thanks so far! Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
That's a lot of extra work and kind of wasting money. I'd keep an eye out for some used round top SU's in good condition (or in need of a rebuild) and just throw those on. If I get a buyer for my engine anytime soon, I might be able to hook you up with my round tops. They run sweet.
Guest Rusty260z
Ok that'd be fine....I was just thinking since I'd be swapping in an L28et from a zx anyways...that it wouldn't be too much to put in the L28 from a z. The choke linkages are kinda screwy and not doing their jobs and the throttle linkage isn't messing with the butterflies...seems like a bit of work just to get the round tops to work...plus however much they cost. Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Try posting a message in the 6 cylinder board asking what they all think about swapping in an L28E until you swap in your L28ET. Most of them have already done either swap, and I think there are a few that did do both in that order.
