Zerrari GTO
I only want about 250-300HP out of my smallblock 350 and am more concerned about keeping noise and heat in the engine compartment down to a minimum. Therefore I was planning on using cast iron exhaust manifolds. The JTR manual says the "rams horn" type or the "log" type used on 1980 & newer Camaro,Caprice &Monte Carlo are the ones that work. Has anybody found other manifolds that will fit w/the JTR conversion? The later Vette manifolds look like they flow well-has anyone tried them? Thanks for any advise I can get! Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
When you are looking at stock manifolds, the biggest question is probably going to be if they will fit your engine.
Zerrari GTO
I have a set of aluminum heads off a 96' Vette. I haven't settled on a short block yet-was waiting to see what type of exhaust (manifolds) I wound up choosing. I have been told that the two previous mentioned exhaust manifolds would work w/these heads.
SpeedRacer
Yes, the cast iron manifolds will help with the noise a little but they are very heavy and will not help with the heat compared to ceramic coated headers. You should really consider using a set of block hugger headers.
Zerrari GTO
Heat is my greatest concern. I've heard so much about melting wires, etc. that I have kind of backed away from the idea of headers. Do the ceramic coated type really put off less heat than cast iron manifolds? If so then my choice has been made (they sure look better than stock manifolds!). Anyone else with knowledge of ceramic coated headers please chime in-I can use all the help I can get. Thanks, J.P. jonzer12
Wires can always be rerouted and protected, I wouldn't concern yourself too much with the heat issue IMHO, just look of the number of people on this site using headers.
Zerrari GTO
The headers I see used the most seem to be Hooker brand block hugger headers. Any info as to which brands fit the best and have the best ceramic coating would be helpful. Since these headers run so close to the oil pan would an oil cooler be recomended? Dan Juday
If you use ceramic coated headers and heat shielding around the wiring that runs near them you won't have any problems. Notice the silver cover over the harness that runs along the frame rail below the right side header.
