Guest Anonymous
I was wondering, what is the main difference(s) between a v-8 in a z and in a zx. I know there's a weight difference, but how much of one is there between the 280z and zx? Also, are there more problems likely to occur in a zx? How much does the normal maintenance cost on a V-8 z? (besides oil changes, spark plugs, etc.) Are they reliable vehicles or what? Thanks for the help.
Guest greimann
The ZX body is a little heavier than the previous generation, but they are still 3000# or less. The difference for engine swaps is that the ZX engine compartment is a little shorter, but ther is still pleanty of room for a V8. Reliability is a loaded question because it largely depends on your skill as an installer and how you treat it after it is driving. The basic Chevy motor is reliable as a refrigerator. It is all of the ancillary systems that have to be modified, or hacked into to make the install work. If you are patient and use good judgment about what materials and techniques you use, then you will have a reliable rig. If you slap dash the wiring and hoses so that they chafe or burn on exhaust pipes, or use inferior materials because they are less expensive initially, you will be walking home a lot. I have 50k miles on my conversion and initially, I walked home a lot, but I leared many lessons and now have a very reliable ride that I have no worries about driving long distances. P.S. My favorite skill that I was compelled to learn was how to drive a 5 speed without a clutch in city traffic. That is definately an exercise in concentration!
