Guest TAlchemist
Hello everyone i know i have been gone for a long time and the car has been collecting dust but i have been looking and looking for an engine to get locally that was a good deal. I think i got it. A nice 350 86-97 5.7L Truck Engine with only 100k and needs a ringe job for $250. I have the engine and am breaking it down to do a full rebuild. So far everything looks perfect and in great condition. I would like to just ask for some advice on what to do first, or what. I have never done much other than rebuild the stock 280z motor and want around 300-400 hp for my first engine. Sugestions are apretiated. Heavy Z
Welcome back, read what grumpyvette says in this post and also read his "picking a cam" post that's down a dozen or so posts. Good luck! http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30289
Guest TAlchemist
Thanks i just printed out grummpies multipage check lists to go over and i still am making my mind up as to what i wanted. My current thinking is that if i make the bottom end really strong and capable of handling more hp than the engine will make at first. Then latter when i get the money make the top end better and produce alot of power. what do you think?
Guest tacamo
With the right 400 parts the 350 could be a 383 stroker. Oct 03 issue of Hot Rodding did a cheap 280Z 383 stroker for $1600 cost of car (cheap) included. Nothing fancy just muscle. FI would have increased the cost. Result: 11.8 in the 1/4. DavyZ
You can usually pick up a Scat 383 internal balance crank on ebay for under $300. You'll need bearings, pistons, and rings, but all that can be bought for cheap if you look in the right places and don't expect 500 or more hp out of the motor! Guest TAlchemist
I dont know i was thinking of keeping it simple for right now and using mostly stock components so i can get it running fast. the strocker 383 i think is well beyond my current budget since it will take me a while to get any money other than getting some transmission and gaskets to go with the engine. i have been thinking about it and beleive for my first engine build i might go with just slightly above stock then if i enjoy driving and tinkering with the engine for speed i will rebuild again later when i have money to make it a full race engine.
