Guest rwreber
Hey, guys. I'm fairly new to this board and fairly new to 1st generation Z's. I've picked up a '77 that is an automatic. I never thought I'd like the automatic, but it's not as bad as I thought. The big problem, though, is the high cruising rpms. I was talking to a pretty knowledgeable Z-car guy about what's involved in doing a 5-sp manual swap, and he casually mentioned that the early 810 Maximas with a straight six had a sweet overdrive automatic that was an easy swap. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? What's the identifying Datsun # for this trans? What's involved in doing this swap? What's the o.d. gear ratio? Has anyone actually done this swap? Thanks in advance. Ralph
DavyZ
Too difficult (obscure?) to say, but since the older Maximas had the same L6 engines, I would say this is true. I would check to see what you rear diff gear ratio is as well. The most practical (cost effective) rear gears are 3.54's, which came stock on most Z R200's. Just a thought. Guest rwreber
Thanks for the response, Davy. I guess my question isn't generating much interest since I'm talking about keeping the L6. My thought was to get a late ZX R-200 with 3.90's and use the o.d. automatic for a good all around streetable...and cruiseable...setup. (My '77 automatic now has an R-180 with 3.54's.) I did find a website that lists the various Nissan auto trans. The 80-82 Maximas (2.4L) used a L3N71B trans (apparently the same as in 80-83 zx's), while the 83-84's used a L4N71B. It's the latter one that I'm assuming is an o.d. Interestingly, the chart shows 84-88 200sx's using the same trans. That's helpful, but I'm still wanting someone who knows a lot more than me to confirm all this...and tell me what's involved in the swap.
