ToplessZ
Ok guys heres the deal getting into the engine building stage of my project and here are my current goals which of course could change. I want the best of both worlds from my car. Im hoping to build and extremely smooth quit nice riding car with all the extras (hopefully power steering and ac) I want to get about 350 horsepower extremely quietly. This is for several reasons first its going to be a driver secondly it is a convertible and thirdly I want it to be a sleeper. A small nitrous shot my be used occasionally but not included in desired hp levels. Any input on exhaust engine components needed and sound proofing procedures would be hugely appreciated. Thanks you guys
Guest Anonymous
Hmmm, asking for alot here out of a Z car IMHO. Smooth riding, quiet and able to perform and be a convertable? Convertables are almost always going to be noisy just due to having a rag or no top. Structurally it'd need much work to keep it from squeeking and rattling and being tinny, much sound deadening to quiet it down which will add weight. Luxurious would almost certainly require a whole cabin rework on a first gen Z. My opinion at least a ZX or third gen car, both of which are heavier, quieter and more luxurious to start with. A 240 could be done, but will be more work and money. Just an opinion worth what you paid for it. Good luck with it. Regards, Lone
RPMS
Hmmm... I'm with Lone on this one. What you're asking isn't impossible by any means, but it will be a lot of work and mucho dinero to accomplish. The big issue as I see it is chopping the roof. Everything else can be done relatively easily, but you're looking at a horrendous amount of money and effort to make a tight, powerful, quiet convertible. As far as having it quiet, I think you'd need stock exhaust manifolds, 2 1/2" pipes, dual resonators to eradicate the drone, and two turbo-type mufflers. Just my two cents. What do the rest of y'all think?
ToplessZ
Just for your guys info my car is already a vertible it is a 280z and as long as the whole kit and caboodle stays under 3000 lbs Ill be happy. Putting in a new complete interior so at least I have a bare platform for sound deadening. Thanks for the input so far guys
Guest Anonymous
Buy a Z-3, It'll be cheaper even if you get the M version. You can't get all that out of a 30 year old car with out MAJOR $. Mark
Guest JAMIE T
Oh come on guys! . He can buy stock in Dynamat, get some Recaro seats, stuff a LT1/6spd in it. He can even get some A/C and power windows. For all of the Nay sayers, Petes car is a good comprimise(its exhuast is still alittle loud) But, it is plush, and has A/C and some sweet Corbeau seats. Guest Anonymous
Jamie, I've got a 73 with lt-1 t-56 sparco milano seats, had ac but it didn't work well enough to suite me, had a street suspension, you know not to stiff but better than stock, those goals of his sounded like my original plans, Finally gave up and just made a weekend cruiser and track car. I love my Z and would not give it up for anything but it will never ride like a modern car. It is a big raw, smelly, loud, curve hugging, push you back in the seat 30 year old car. I love my Z.. If he is stuck on the Z then by all means go for it but...

Guest greimann
For the motor part of the project, you are going to need some nice flowing heads and a cam with at minimum 112 deg lsa to maintain idle quality and low speed drivability. I like the Crane #114142 camshaft, (216, 228 @.050 - 112 LSA) and Trick flow heads.
Guest Anonymous
Regarding the noise insulation issue: THE most effective product on the market is CoolCar Ceramic coating, http://www.coolcarceramic.com , applied to the interior and underbody. Rodders like Boyd Coddington can't believe how much better than mat material this stuff is. The combination of suspended ceramic mirco-beads and the fact that it's seamless, means a major drop in transmitted noise and heat. Figure around $300 for the product, plus labor if you can't shoot it yourself.
