Turbo Charging a SMB 350

Greetings,

I'm looking into a turbo for my mild SMB 350. I didn't build the engine but I was told the CR is about 10 to 10:5, not completely sure I believe that. I've done all of the top end work so I know whats there.

Is this compression ratio too high to add a turbo? Is there better more HP for the buck out there? I'm looking at about $600 for a used setup.

Thanks

Hi John,

Are the piston's domed or flat tops? If its a flat top with small chamber heads (64 cc or even 58cc), you could probably find a cheap set of smog heads (76cc) to drop the compression down to a usuable level. 10-1 is IMHO on the verge or getting close to detonation already without introducing extra cyl pressure from a turbo. Just an idea.

As far as bang for buck, probably recamming it would see a pretty good increase if its running a stock cam. I can't recall, didn't you have vortec heads and manifold? Anyway, thats about the only comment I have on it, good luck with it, and yeah we need to get together again and we'll do that soon, maybe get a few of the other arizonans together somewhere sometime too. Take care.

Hi Lone,

Thanks for the input. Yes, I have a new set of Vortec heads that still need to be put on. I'm running a mild cam 217in./224ex for emissions approx .480 lift. I probably should complete the vortec conversion and drive it for a while before I lay down more coin on HP. Hope you are recovering well. 2thumbs.gif

You should be alright running a turbo with that compression, but yes, your on the verge of being too high, but I think you could get by if the engine is in good condition. If you have the heads and everything to lower your compression, then by all means go for it, it will help you out and give you some extra insurance that nothing is going to blow up. For $600 thats a great deal. Even if its a small turbo, $600 for all the parts to install it is a good deal. What size is the turbo and what kind of shape is it in?
