Guest Ricter
Ok to start I have a 1977 280Z, all stock L28, it's running beautifully at the moment, but I started noticing today a consistant humming noise coming from the rear of the car. It's my guess that this is the fuel pump making this noise as I can't think of anything else back there that would be. I noticed NO degradation of drivability or performance while it's making this noise. Is this an early warning sign that my fuel pump is going out? Or is there something else that could be making this noise? Thanks in advance, Ricter
Guest Zachb55
I've got a 240 with an L28 swap and id assume a fuel pump from a 280z and my pump is always on when my key is in the on position... with the engine running or not. now im no electrical wiz or anything, but without a pressure regulator, how do i know its always giving my engine enough fuel? my stepdad says it should go off after it builds pressure in the line... with a "run-through" (for lack of better words) system should it always be on, and should it be loud enough to hear over the engine idling? -Zach
280Zen
Yes the noise your hearing is your fuel pump. when you turn your key to the on position the pump should run for 5 seconds then turn off unless you start the car. If the noise from your pump continues to get louder then the pump could be failing, or something could be obstructing the fuel flow causing the pump to work harder. If the hose from the sending unit to the pump is stock it could be dried out and cracking which would cause an air leak, This would also cause the pump to whine or get noiser and eventually fail. Guest Zachb55
you know the sound a fish tank air pump makes? its like that but really loud and it just goes and goes and goes, so im thinking it's toast, what's a good replacement for a pretty much stock L28? -Zach
