Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Ok, I knew there was a reason that I hadnt installed a timing arrow on my engine (1988 Chevy 350) yet... I dont have a timing mark on the pulley or damper! I have looked all around both and I dont see any mark. The only mark I have is the white-out painted one on the pulley that I marked to give me an idea of approximately when cylinder 1 is a TDC when I was originally trying to get the engine started. What is the best procedure for resolving this? Do I need to take the timing cover off and line up the marks on the gears and put a new damper on? Is it possible to scribe my own mark on? I have never done anything like this before, so any advice or step by steps would help. BTW, no, I dont have a V8 in my Z yet, this is for my truck. Pyro
That is strange. Chevy balancers should have a single line cut all the way across the side of the circle. There should be nothing on the pulley. If the heads are off then you can use a dial indicator to find TDC. Use a hole punch to mark TDC on the balancer at the 0 on the timing mark. If the head is on then you can use a screw in "stop" the goes inside the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine manually (gently) until the piston hits the stop then mark the balancer. Then rotate the engine in the opposite direction until the engine stops again and again mark the balancer. TDC on the balancer is centered between marks. Guest digitalz
Do the above and get a balancer cover. the cover will have reference marks on it in degrees. i guess if you're on a real budget get some timing tape kt
