I'm lucky enough to live in the start and finsh town this year!! http://www.tirerack.com/features/motorsports/one_lap.html I went out crusing on the local Bypass/highway, and saw *several* Vipers and 911's just running around, looking very nice and shiney. *drools*. The race will finsh up on the 8th of May, and i'm gonna go up to the track and take pics. Hopefully by next year i can enter with a V8Z! CableSrv Posted May 1, 2004 Share Posted May 1, 2004 that doesn't sound like the normal cannonball run... that's a tirerack sponsered wannabe it looks like.... skid pad events trying to measure g's being competitive ? doesn't sound right. cannonball is just a large race from coast to coast, not some yuppy competition in a skid pad event.... the offical race is labeled the cannonball RUN not this cannonball 1 lap crap... it'll be kewl to see the vehicals but it's yuppy and not worth really being in it... now the REAL cannonball run would be AWESOME to be in. The competition STARTS with a skidpad event at the Tire Rack's facilities in South Bend, IN. After that, contestants travel to seven race tracks where they complete 2 timed laps each. They get as far west as Sears Point in California. They then return to the Tire Rack facilities for another skidpad test. The total distance the drivers will travel, racing milage not included, is 5628 this year. They must be at the tracks at specified times, and their times at the tracks are used as scoring. The reason for the skidpad testing is because each team is only allowed to use one set of tires. What they use from track to track they also use on the track. And, since Tire Rack sponsers the event, what better competition than a tire-testing competition? Oh, the event also takes place over only 9 days, meaning about 626 miles of driving per day. I mean this isn't the ORIGINAL cannonball run and yes I did research the race from midwest to cali part while nice to see them cross 3/4 of the usa then back it's still not as thrilling as the original. yes many will compete but it's more of a SPONSERED race which means alot less massive moment happening like in the NORMAL cross country cannonball run. things like a ferrari owner demolishing the car then running to a dealer buying another one then continuing the race.... what I meant by yuppie is now it's a fully sponsered race and it really is only to show off another companies ability and not the spirit of really being there. the original was only a title reward and some hummer I think won Plus the cannonball is a fully fledge setup that have parties at like top five star hotels and crap and to see these massive ammount of cars there and partying with them and running from one coast to another is a massive thriller. now yes running from cali to 3/4 way to other side of the us then back while having to get to a track in a certain time is kewl but notice they said LEGAL DRIVING SPEED, which means they will set a LEGAL time limit to get to the track...... otherwise it promotes racing in the streets and you know that can't happen in a SPONSERED event. the original cannonball run isn't really sponsered if I remember correctly. RPMS Posted May 1, 2004 Share Posted May 1, 2004 In a way, I agree with Cablesrv. The "wow" factor is pretty much gone. There was something extremely cool about having an underground race, where people slept in shifts, peed in gatorade bottles, and made up for lost time by blasting along deserted roads at 150 mph. Oh, and even though it is theoretically possible to complete the leg by staying within the speed limits, that's much more difficult to do in reality. Pee breaks, stopping for fuel, taking the wrong exit, etc. Timed rallys aren't easy. Yes, this sort of thing is politically incorrect, but I don't care - it's still cool. Last year there was a little blurb in their coverage in the magazine about a V8 powered 240Z that was in the race, which I thought was pretty cool. It's owned by Bob Murray of Ann Arobor, MI if anybody knows him. He finished 33rd out of 84 I believe. There are all kinds of cars there, from Neons to Diablos and everything in between. Lots of engine swaps too- a Vette with the 7.0 C5-R engine, a Lexus IS300 with a twin-turbo Supra motor. Looks like a fun event. CableSrv Posted May 1, 2004 Share Posted May 1, 2004 it's all good!!! we are all car ppl and each has their own opinion just to me a sponsered race thats on normal driving roads will never be considered thrilling as they can't offically state times that require you to go past the speed limit or say you can't win without doing so. Which means you won't see all those cars GOING fast as hell!!! where as the underground cannonball run or gumball is more or less "just get to this point PERIOD, first to get there wins btw there is awesome parties every 5 star hotel that's on the way to the other coast have fun ppl :D" type thing which once I finish my twin turbo lt1 I wanna go in it. It's something like 5 grand to enter, but they PAY for all your food and your hotel rooms you stay at IN those 5 star hotels so you CAN party if you choose to or.... you could just skip the parties and just try to be first Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
