Guest Zachb55
Ive been snooping around trying to find some info on why my points might keep burning up... what i came across is that the "ballast resistor" is key in the survival of mechanical points and replacements like a pertronix kit as well. im not 100% sure but the ballast resistor is located below the coil and consists of a white ceramic block with a spring-like wire connecting two other wires, is this the ballast resistor? if so, and mine is still in place, do these things go bad very often? also, if anyone knows, is there a way to update the ballast resistor, maybe with a new resistor from radio shack or somethin? well thanks for reading, any help will be appreciated. -Zach
Guest Phil1934
Get a volt meter and check voltage. Ballast resistor should cut it to half after cranking. (There is also a wire from the starter that allows full voltage while cranking.) Also check how the points are burning. If material is being deposited from one side to the other, the condensor may be wrong.
