Re-installed dash and now headlights don't work

Hi Folks,

I seem to have created a problem for myself, on a 73 240 I took out the dash to put in white faced gauges and a dash cover, when I re-installed the dash and reconnected all the wiring everything works but the headlights. The tail lights work, so do the parking lights, the wiper, distributor power, etc., and I can see the amp gauge move when I turn on the lights. The headlights worked before I pulled the dash.

I have no power to the two ten amp fuses that run the headlights; I have tried two different fuse blocks including one of those new ones from MSA with the blade type fuses. I have also checked the power to the combo switch, there is power coming in, and power going out when I turn on the lights.

I was pretty careful about labeling all the connections and I have spent a fair amount of time checking and double checking to be sure they are all connected and properly seated.

The car is in the final stages of a multi-year refurbishing, it was taken down to a body shell and rebuilt - the wiring was left in. The only other electrical change has been to install one of those alternators with an internal voltage regulator.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks,

Mike

I just did the same thing last month. I must have rested the dash on the combo switch while I was wrestling it back in the car. Whatever the case, the combo switch was broken after I got everything back together. I wound up cannibalizing a 280 switch to get the tiny plastic part that I broke. That wasn't fun, but it sure was a lot easier than pulling the dash back out!
