Testing 280ZXT distributor?

How would I go about testing a 280ZXT distributor OUT of the car (like with an alternate power source and a multimeter, etc..) .. I have looked over the wiring diagrams and am getting a headache so any help would be appreciated.. My main concern is how do I get the LED in the distributor to come on (is it a real LED or not visible to the human eye?) .. Thanks guys. hope you can save me more headaches.

Two of the terminals are ground and 12v+. You can apply 12 directly to those. (You will have to test the plug on the car with the key on to determine which two are for power input. ) The other two are seperate outputs. One is for the inner set of slots and the other is for the outer set of slots. You will set the vom to 20volts dc (analog vom preferably). Connect the vom ground lead to power ground and use the positive (red) lead to test the outputs. Test the two outputs seperately. You will see the vom needle jump every time the slot passes through the led gap. I believe there are two leds, one for each row of slots.

If it is bad, you can use the sensor from any 300zx years 84 to 89. first generation 300zx.
