Guest E.Murray
I have a 350 that has been reading low oil pressure. I just bought the car and the engine was new 8000 miles ago (have receipts), so I was hoping the gauge was just off. It would read about 70 psi at startup, but would drop to below 20 as it warmed up (even at highway speeds) . The other day I had the window down and noticed a little extra racket when under load (going uphill). When I stopped at a light the gauge dropped to nearly zero and there was a lot of clattering when I started (slowly) accelerating. The gauge went back up to its usual 15-20 psi reading when I got underway. I parked it and haven't started it since. I realize I'll probably get the joy of pulling the engine (with no garage and a very steep driveway - should be fun). What should I look for? I know one of the first areas will be clearances on the crank. What else? Is there anything I can check with the engine in? I just dumped all my cash into buying the thing and we're trying to build a house, so I'm thrilled at the prospect of spending the time and money to rebuild a new engine... Any advice is appreciated. A. G. Olphart
As you have determined, it needs help- rebuild/replacement time. 70 psi at startup indicates that all the galley plugs are in place; as the oil warms and thins, the pressure goes away. Since it is rattling, at least some of the bearings are gone- probably all of them-, so it needs a crank (if you are lucky none of the bearings have spun =crossing fingers= and the rod big ends are still round). This may all have been precipitated by a cam failure, so look for worn cam lobes while you have the engine apart. I'd do a full teardown, thoroughly clean it all (esp. oil galleys), look at/measure everything to see what is still useable and go from there. Maybe someone else has a rosier view, but this is the sad sight in my crystal ball... sorry
