Guest 280z400
Hi, everone, ive love this site and have been with the forum for about 6 months. I currently own an 1985 nissan 300zxT and a 1976 Datsun 280z. The 300zx looks like a beater car, and the datsun 280z's is a very good chasis(for oklahoma) and the motor locked up. I spun a #2 connecting rod bearing and had to pull the engine out of the 300zxt and rebuild it. And all the while i was collaborating with my brother to drop the 300zxt engine into the 280z. Times come for the test fit of the partially assembled motor and tranny. The 280z tranny mount fit perfectly on the t5 tranny. Both tranny casing bolts to mounts were the same basic size and exact thread pattern. The tranny bolted right up and the shifter had clearance enough to shift all gears. But when the console was put on the shifter hit the console and stoped 1st 3rd and 5th tranny shifts. Although that wasn't as much of a problem as the oil pan hit the 280z's front corssemember. So we already drew out a template the move the t5 back 3 inches. It will most likely be made out of 1/4 inch steel/aluminum/metal of some sort or the thickness might be increased if rigidity seems to be comprimised. We aligned the driveshaft with the diff, and we came up with a clearance of 6 5/16 from center of the crank snout to the top of the 280z crossmember. The front motor mounts idea's are still coming, as most likely both stock mounts will be utilized into the new mount. The drivshaft i think will be fairly simple as we have both drivshafts from both cars, measurments will be taken and the info and parts will be relayed into a shop who does custom drivshafts. More info will come as the progress is done.
ZR8ED
http://zacksz.homestead.com/projectboost.html Here check out some of my info on my swap. I did this 4 years ago. I'm not sure if any other versions of my write up exist on the internet. I have written a fairly detailed account, and have taken many pics of the process. Search this site using "ZR8ED" and you'll find more pics of my swap. Good luck! BTW don't forget to check you turbo to steering clearances. The turbo does not clear the steering at all. I to used the stock 280z tranny mount. I modded it slightly to set the tranny back further. My engine sits very tight to the firewall. Scott.
