jonzer12
Start with the JTR v8Z book, then buy their TBI/TPI swap book, those 2 should answer 80-90 percent of your questions. As far the computer goes I have no idea what diagnostic tools are available for but I would start by cleaning every connection and checking out the sensors. Swap another computer in if you can get your hands on one. Good luck
Mike kZ
Is the engine light on in the trans am? You need to address those first. If the engine light is not on, then it's either fuel, or spark. Is the fuel pump working? Pull a plug while turning over, is there spark? I had an 86 Berreta that the ignition module fried, but there was no error message, I had to find it myself. Guest 83supaZ
the 305 is still in the 86 trans am i bought for 360. the guy i bought it from said the computer was screwed.. i believe this is the case also. when i try to start it the car just turns over and over w/o starting. i found how to read the computer, but what will let me know it is definatly the computer, and not some part the computer is connected to? also once the 305 is installed in my 83 zx i am going to leave the motor stock until i get used to it. how much power on avg could i get out of the 305? i know it depends on money spent etc... but this isnt my daily driver so thats not really an issue. also... could i just somehow use the motor mounts from the trans am? Guest Magnum Rockwilder
You can't use the motor mounts from the Trans Am unless you're a fabricator. GM computer controlled vehicles are the devil, so I'm not touching your question about the computer. I would just throw on a regular intake manifold and carb and call it done. 305's with basic intake/exhaust will put about 150hp to the wheels. Add a good street/strip cam and you might get near 200hp. A fully built 305 can put out 400hp, but it will be at 7500rpm and it will cost an arm and a leg. Most people don't modify 305's and go with 350's instead.
