Guest Pegasus76
I am wondering, which would be better money, parts, and labor wise. Buying and putting a 350 in a 260Z or buying and putting in a 280ZX turbo engine. Which one would last longer also?
Scottie-GNZ
Remember, not all 350s are born equal! FLAME SUIT ON If you are talking about a run-of-the-mill 350, even a 4-bbl engine, I say go with the L28ET. It will be less expensive, easier and with about 10psi, running efficiently, the L28ET in a 260Z will outperform the run-of-the-mill 350. FLAME SUIT OFF Now, if you are talking about an LT1, LS1 or modded 350, its a whole different ballgame. Will it last? An SBC or L6, properly maintained, is indestructable. Guest Anonymous
This is a question I pondered myself. I couldn't really make the decision, so I had to get 2 Z's ..one for the l28et (streeter 280zx daily driver, but still boasting POWER) and of course the 383 for the 240z.. no holding back on this one. The 240 will be my race/show car.. while the 280zx I can tune down to 7 or 8 psi, keep my foot out of it and get in excess of 20 mpg- not too bad imho. Its easy to get streetable horse either way, depending on how you set it up. Like Scottie mentioned, "the" 350- hah.. the sbc 350 is probably the most heavily variant motor on earth. Just as a small note to emphasize my point.. a 1970 'ray came bare with a 300 hp benchmark, a '75 came with 165 .. Can we say dog years? Also factor in the gross vs net. the of course the 400 hp 2002 z06 ls6! .. and gets mid 20's mpg. But anyway, you see my point. Squarely, its all up to you.. some will argue that the l28et is a waste of time/money, but I disagree. I'll be putting about 4k into my swap.. but only about 2.5k goes into actual motor. The rest is stuff I'd be doing even I was swapping a v8 (trans, rearend, wider wheels/tires, etc). BTW, I'm shooting for 300 hp.. at the wheels for the 280zx. For that figure, I doubt I could have done it for under 2.5k.. with the JTR conversion and all, new trans, etc. I think everyone will give you this piece of advice, so I'll go ahead and speak for all of us.. Its all up to you, whatever turns your crank! I honestly couldn't decide, so I just settled for both! Good luck, and be sure to check out some member rides for inspiration. Also note that you aren't limited to an L or a sbc.. there are a lot of other swaps done here... check em all out. -980mak
