Heavy Z
Hi everyone, I've got an HEI that likes to fry modules about every two months. I'm just beginning to investigate, anyone had a similar experience or any helpful advise? Thanks and happy holidays, Brett
GrayZee
have you been using di-electric grease between the module and the distributor body? If not you should.
Heavy Z
Thanks for the reply, I use the grease that comes with the module and make sure not to tighten it down enough to squeeze it out.
labrat
You may need to tighten it a little tighter, then. There needs to be good contact between the module and the metal mount, the grease is just to assist it in conducting heat. Squeeze all of it out that you possibly can to get the best themal transfer. You may also want to look at computer heatsink grease, some of it has excellent heat transfer properties.
Guest Night_rider_383
There's 4 things I can think of that kills HEI modules 1) Pick up coil, inside dist. It's the coil under the advance weights, and has 2 wires on it, that plugs onto the module. If it's going bad, it will kill em' 2) module over heating, but if your putting the grease under them that shouldnt be the prob 3) ignition coil going bad. When it starts to go, it will short out the module 4) Bad ground between batt/engine and engine/dist. One of those badd conntection type deals where it grounds good some times, and not so good other times
waynekarnes
i don't claim to know anything about this ... just parroting what a retired mechanic working the counter at kragen's was telling a customer this afternoon, who was having the same problem ... same info as what night rider 383 suggested ... the counter man was telling the customer holding the hei dizzy, that the customer had to make sure the engine was grounded to the body and the frame, and that the dizzy was well grounded as well ... counter man was explaining about how he went to some school put on by delco remey and how they stressed that the number one reason for mods going bad, or intermitent trouble is bad grounds.
