Guest tony78_280z
I just got this HEI upgrade kit today Quote Kit includes: hi-power 50,000 volt coil, ''no arc'' rotor, premium cap, module, coil dust covere, hi-performance advance unit, HEI bushing, wire harness and capacitor, hi-performance advance spring, weight set, and mounting hardware. But it didn't come with any instructions. So why I send a nasty e-mail to the supplier, can anyone tell me where I might download some good instructions regarding installing these components. Particularly the advance spring, weight set and bushings.
dladow
Here's something I have in my links library. I'm about to rebuiild my HEI as well. All I've done so far is take it apart and clean it. http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/distcurve.html In addition, David Vizard's book on building a small block chev on a budget has a section on rebuilding and tuning an HEI, complete with pictures. Vizard is a big proponent of HEI's. Dave
Guest tony78_280z
Thanks for that link, I'm gonna print it asap. Any info on where those bushings go? Or how to wire up that Module and wire harness? Sounds like I need to buy a copy of that book!
dladow
Actually, now that I'm home and don't have to rely on my faulty memory, I gave you the wrong book. It's in Vizard's basic "How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy" book, not the "build a performance sbc on a budget" book (although both are worth having). He goes into some detail on process. Since I haven't done it yet, I can't say how easy (or hard) it will be. Otherwise, I haven't found a whole lot on the net about rebuilding HEI's. Guest tony78_280z
I e-mailed them Quote I have purchased the following kit from JEGS. It came with no instructions please send them to me ASAP! They responded Quote Tony, Please be advised we do not have instruction sheets available for p/n 66949, tune-up kits. Please feel free to give one of our technicians a call @ 1-800-521-1005 for further assistance. Thank you for purchasing Proform and have a great day! So, don't buy from Proform unless you already know what you are doing. Or don't feel instructions are important. I don't know about you, but I get more done with the the technical data and instructions in front of me, than I do on the phone tyring to explain to some frickin tech what year my car is and listen to him describe to me what part I should be looking at. Particularly when I don't have a phone in my garage. I realy like the "and have a great day!" They should have just signed off "good frickin luck, sucker!" Guest tony78_280z
The picture in the link supplied by dladow happens to be in mirror image to my dizzy. In the pic the vac advance is coming out of the opposite side. And the weights and center plates in the kit look nothing like either my dizzy originals, or those on this link. Being brave, I went out to do this upgrade without any instructions other than the link above. I got everything replaced and it ran horrible. It idles OK but as it revs up it sputters and stumbles more horibbly until it finally backfires real bad and dies. I then began to put back in the original weights, center plates and springs. In the process I dropped my parts tray (the old dizzy cap) and the original springs went "bye bye". I put the orignal parts in with the new springs again and it still runs the same as above, horribly. I don't know if I got the original parts in correctly, because I didn't take a picture before removing them. (I new I should have brought the girl friends digital camera I bought her for valantines day) The only instructions I got are from the mirror imaged link and I don't realy trust them. Are the springs the common denominator? Did I reinstall the parts wrong? Can anybody scan/post/find/aquire some good instructions for me? I realy need a picture of how these weights and stuff should look once installed correctly. HELP!!
Guest tony78_280z
I aquired a junk Dizzy, and compared. I had the center plate in upside down. I went back to the stock set up (except the coil and, Module, Condensor and wireing harness) and used the middle springs. Timed about about 10-12 it runs pretty good and throttles stronge up in the RPM. I think i got it under control. Now I gotta figure out what to do with the Carb I cross threaded. Guest tony78_280z
(I just love replying to myself) Fixed my carb problem and then fired it up to test the carb and the timing was off. WTF, It was set last time I messed with it. Set the timing at 10o, and it idled ok, but when I throttled it it proceeded to run like crap. I ran out of time to work on it (I gotta beat the evening temperature drop) so i'll mess with it more tomarrow. But these facts 1) that it was timed good the other day, and today the timing was off. 2) that once the timing was reset it ran worse as the throttle increased makes me think that I'm still having problems with these springs and this curve crap. At this point I'm just tryin to go back to stock! Any advice?
