Guest livewire23
man, its been a while since I've been on these boards. I've been away from my Z for a while :'( (school and such). Anyway, when I get back to the US to go to school in the fall, I'm gonna need a car, and I was thinking that maybe it'd be possible to set up the Z as a daily driver. I don't really drive much during the semester, so it could work out nicely. I just wonder how much of a hassle it'd be, maybe some people who have gone through tough registrations can tell me what I'm in for. For reference, this is a 1977 280Zt. For starters, I don't have the title, although I do hold out hope that I can get it from the old owner. Secondly, I don't think its been registered in about a decade. I'm assuming I'm gonna have to affix all the smog crap and get an exhaust (!), a cat, and do some tuning. I hope the turbo won't cause any problems at the smoggers. If I can't get the title, I can't register it in cali, right? What options do I have then? This is a bit of a pipe dream, I'll probably just end up with the miata. It's just that the Z is just parked in my mom's garage, and I'd really like to be able to work on it again. On the other hand, it's a bit mean to be bringing it out to Iowa with the snow and such hell. Thoughts? Suggestions?
randy 77zt
if possable keep it registered in iowa.if you try to register it in ca it will be a major hassle.i have a 77z with a turbo engine in it and have a california smog license.car will have to have all the zxt smog gear hooked up and operative and pass a sniffer test at a referee station.then they issue a sticker to put in the door jamb certifying the swap.plus car insurence is $ here.every 2 years car has to have smog inspection and it will be at a test only station.best advice is to stay out of california. Guest livewire23
I don't think I could get it all the way to iowa to be smogged. The car is in california, its just that I won't be for a couple of years. Although after thinking it over for a while, and remembering the amazing lack of safety equipment on that Z, I don't think I want it as a daily driver. = It'll be more fun anyway as a track car =D I think I'll stick to trying to get a miata...
