Guest pinheadfink
I have searched all 23 pages of the exhuast sub-forum. On the 23rd page I have found a decent answer to the Monza exhaust and bits and pieces for the other two. I have a stock 1978 280Z(my father's the original owner)(L28 with a year old 2" exhaust, yes 2"(I measured - I'm not 100% sure, but aren't the stock pipes 2.25"?) - when my father and I were restoring the car(after sitting for 10 years) he simply wanted to get everything street legal and clean. Well, we did and now I'd like a sound that fits the Z. In short, past idle, the engine drowns out the exhaust - you can't hear it. After reading a bunch of threads, I didn't seem to find decent answers to what some good replacement stock setups would be. After seeing the Monza in Victoria British for years now, it seemed like a good choice. Are the MSA's really that loud? I don't want to be forced to drive the car with ear plugs only - it's a daily driver with a decent sound system that I'd like to actually hear. After reading about all these different mufflers and exhaust setups, it really is overwhelming. Like I said, I want a sound that fits the look of the Z - hopefully a european-esque sound. From what I read on that sound it seemed like performance would be degraded because of the amount of resonators. I definitely want to have a quicker throttle response when I shell out some cash for an exhaust. The new 350Z has a decent sound to it - I doubt the L28 can put out that sound, but who knows. Don't want this classic Z sounding like a truck, an american muscle car, or a ricer. All suggestions are highly welcome.
Guest 81na ZX
I have the MSA turbo catback on my ZX. Sounds was decent, before my header/downpipe rusted through. Fit was horriable though. And no instructions on how it all goes together. Oh, and it replaced the cat with a straight pipe, so if you had a cat stock, and have emissions testing, thats a no no. And you shouldn't have any problem not sounding like a ricer - The I6 kinda prevents that But my turbo talon has a throatier, more muscle car-y sound than the MSA's sound. Guest pinheadfink
Thanks - did you notice any performance differences? Regarding the Targa exhuast system - MSA claims: Targa Exhaust System The Targa System is a great replacement for the original exhaust. The free-flowing mufflers reduce back pressure while providing a rich, European tone. Does not require modifying emission control systems. Easy installation. Black, high temp wrinkle finish with chrome tips. I'm assuming the Euorpean tone they claim is from the muffler alone? What about high flow cats if I need to keep a cat on. I live in New Orleans, so they haven't checked anything past the brake lights since the early 1980s; I might not need to keep the cat on. Guest 81na ZX
like a month after I bought the car, the original muffler broke off on a speed bump, so I have no before to compare to. With this exhaust, I did run an advertised stock quarter at 220k miles... so either the exhaust helped, or the engine didn't loose any power over 24 years.
