Could use a bit of tranny help

So I just purchased this 71 240z which has a chevy v8 327 with an Automatic Turbo 400 transmission. I'm new to the muscle world but I'm workin' on figurin' it out; gonna take some time I think and at least one auto shop at the local Junior College.

Anyway, I hate automatics and I badly want to do a five speed conversion. Problem is, I don't know much and, as I read through the forums, I feel more and more lost in brand names.

Anybody know of a good site or source of info to help me out?

How about a little advice on what I should do if I want a quick rpm drop (lighter flywheel I assume) and a smooth power curve through all five gears. It was suggested that I find an 82 v8 manual Chevy Camaro tranny but I'm not sure if this is the best way to go or what.

Any help would be just that: helpful.

Thanks.

Scott

Welcome to Hybrid Z Scott. I have a 327 in my 71 with a 5 speed from an '88 V8 camaro. It is called a T5, in this case a 'world class' or wcT5. You can use a non wcT5 (from an 85-87 camaro) or wcT5 (from an 88+ camaro, stronger than a non wcT5). I also installed a countergear stabilizer in mine from gearzone. Search gearzone, 5speeds.com, and G-force on this site for more info. You'll need a 153 tooth flywheel, camaro bellhousing, slave cylinder, and modify fittings. The JTR catalog covers it all, JTR.com. You probably won't need a light flywheel as that V8 will rev up pretty quick as it is, look around as some of the stock flywheels you can use were lighter than others. Searching this site will get you most everything you need, good luck!

You say that you hate automatics, but you might consider a swap to a 4L60 before you give up on automatics entirely. A well built 4L60 will not only out perform a standard but it will also cost a whole lot less to do the swap since your car is already an automatic.

Big question, your Z previously have a manual tranny connected to the old motor? Or will you need to install a clutch master cylinder, all of the dines and peddel? Sounds like alot of fabrication and modification if you were going from an auto to manual.

Me, I went from manual to automatic in my Z swap. I left all the lines and cylinders in there incase I ever descide to change my mind and go back to a manual. If you go with the 700r4 Overdrive automatic Tranny, you'll prolly want an 87-92. Other models of Tranny I can not offer suggestions.
