strotter
I have a 350-or-so hp 350 in a '72 with a T56. When launching, I'm always concerned that I'm burning up the clutch, or burning up the tires, and just generally not doing it right. For instance, what RPM is appropriate for launch? At what point should the clutch be fully engaged? How do you control wheelspin, clutch or throttle? How about throwing a drag-newby a few tips? Guest Magnum Rockwilder
Every setup is different, so it's IMPOSSIBLE to tell you how to do a perfect launch online. However, with a high torque street tire vehicle, here's what I would try at first: hold at 2000rpm Launch the car by slipping the clutch about halfway through the friction zone, adjusting the throttle to keep the rpm's above 2000 Once the car is moving, continue releasing the clutch and applying more throttle, until you're at full throttle. How fast you can hit full throttle depends on how much wheel spin you have. In some cars, you can hit WOT immediately without spinning... in others you'll never get over 3/4 throttle in 1st gear. Remember: it's better to bog than to spin, so a conservative launch is the best choice when on street tires.
