Camshaft & Head Install Problem

Ok, I finally got all my parts execpt for the balancer so I'm bolting it all back up but I've got a problem.

When I get the pistons to TDC (1 & 6 at the top of the bore) I can't install the head. One of the valves on number 6 is open when both valves on 1 are closed. I got the head with the cam installed straight up. So I put the head on the block and installed the center head bolts finger tight and spun the cam untill the valves were in a position to allow the head to be installed. I pulled the head off after it was on the block and the valves were open 1 has a open intake valve and 6 has an open exhaust.

I did spin the cam around (on the bench) but I didn't go all the way around since it wasn't looking like I would find a spot they were both installed.

Oh I should also mention before I took the head back off to chack the valves I installed the camshaft sproket and chain. The bright links were where they should be and so was the notch. I don't know if that would make any difference.

So what could be going on? Is everything fine? Should I just spin the cam and see if 1 & 6 both close the valves (I don't think it will)?

Well I spun the cam all the way around and there is no point where the valves in 1 & 6 are all closed.

I did get 1 closed and 6 had the exhaust valve open I can keep spining it until it starts to close enough that I can install the head, also the dowl was at the 11 o'clock position I can get the dowl th 12o'clock and the valves in 6 are both open slightly.

I thinking I should get the dowl in the 12 o'clock position when 1 is closed and 6 is barely open. It's getting late and my head is killing me but that sound right to me.

I think you're complicating matters more than they should be complicated.

As long as you have the #1 cyl. at tdc, and the exhaust and intake valves at 10 and 2 o'clock, then you should be able to install the head. Are you doing all this outside of the car? If so double check the bright links on the timing chain, and the dowel on the cam sprocket to be put on the right position. Little insignificant mistakes will do that sort of thing to you, so double check you work.
