Guest bastaad525
answer: Not much at all! Okay first off let me apologize real quick I wasn't too sure exactly where to put this, I figured the turbo section but didn't really think it was a 'tech' article... no big deal if you mods see fit to move it over to whatever section. Anyways, I finally got around to re-weighing my car today, and was very pleasantly surprised at what I found. The first time I weighed it was a couple years back before the L28ET swap. Setup back then was an L28 motor, late '70s 5 speed, 3.9 diff, SU carbs, headers, I dunno what else of significance. Weighed the car with my toolset (about 5ish lbs) jack and spare (I dunno 15-20lbs total?) and about 4-5 gallons of gas. Total weight was 2320lbs. Well, I figured the turbo swap would probably add quite a bit, with the turbo itself and all the EFI gear and the intercooler and stainless steel piping. I've been dieing to weigh it again and find out. So, back on the scale today, still with my toolset and spare in the car but no jack, and with about 7-8 gallons of fuel. Total weight 2350lbs. Dunno about you guys but I said WOW! This was at the SAME scale, and the guy told me they get it calibrated every week, as the scale is used for certifying trucks or something like that so by law it has to be accurate. If you figure the extra fuel alone (what is fuel like 8 lbs per gallon?) the weight is almost exactly the same... I was really shocked I expected to see maybe 2400lbs. so anyways, just thought I'd share that interesting bit of info
HeatRaveR
I'm not too surprised the turbo didn't add much weight. I mean, a turbo weighs, what 10-20lbs? And piping is all hollow, so it shouldn't weigh much. And the EFI stuff is just a few pounds too. On a stock 280ZX Turbo, I think most of the added weight was from all the luxury stuff more than the actual turbo system.
Guest bastaad525
actually I was expecting the most from the turbo itself, and from the intercooler and all the piping... that thing was pretty heavy when I had it out. But really, if you try to account for the difference in weight simply from having more fuel when I weighed yesterday (at least about 3 gallons), the weight of the car is almost identical. I guess my 100lbs estimate was a bit pessimistic but come on... almost no weight added at all?? VERY nice. I was also wondering how much it altered the 52/48 split of the front/rear weight balance... though I don't really have a way to check that out unfortunately.
