AK-Z
As the title said I want to turbo my engine (rebuild for it) but do I advance the spark or retard it on boost? How would I do that on a vacuum adavnce dizzy, or would I have to buy a special dizzy for it? Any additional info is welcomed. The reason I want to turbo my NA 280z motor instead of doing a swap is because I can't find a zx turbo engine up here.
Guest bastaad525
you need timing to retard when boost comes on. The more boost you run, and the higher compression the motor, the more retard you will need. You have a few options. If you want to run the mechanical, N/A distributor, you should run a one-way check valve inline with the line to the vacuum advance canister... boost going to that can damage it. I have heard some people will weld up the slots that allow mechanical advance. But preferably, if you want to run that distributor, you would get one of the MSD modules that senses boost in the manifold and retards timing for you. However, this brings up the question, what EFI setup were you planning on using? The N/A EFI? This presents more problems than just spark timing control... really, you shoulnd't even think of running the N/A EFI, but rather, you should swap out for (at the least) a full 280zx turbo wiring harness and efi setup, including injectors and a turbo distributor. If you were planning on running the turbo efi, you NEED the turbo distributor, it wont run w/o it. Of course, the even better option would be some sort of programmable EFI, that will also take care of timing for you.
AK-Z
Well I already have a turbo dizzy. but I need to get the turbo oil pump and shaft for it to fit. And I need to find where I can get my hands on a turbo wiring harness and ecu. Any ways that is what I was planning on doing anyways. Living in alaska sucks. I was even thinking of megasquirting it, but I know of noone up here to help me with that.
AK-Z
I have a question: What block did the NA 280zx come with? I can get my hands on a long block, but its NA and if its basically the same as my n47 then I don't think its worth the effort. And would using a z31 electronics work? I know I have to weld a bum on the n47 (if I'm going to use that) for the pinging sensor. What other things would I have problems with? Is getting a p79 or p90 head even worth it over the n42 head that I have (I have 2 complete engines [n42 and n47]) using it for my turbo application? edit: Oh keep in mind this is for autox and street app.
