Guest 73Turbo240z
I read up on the 12si and 10si alternators, i've decided i'd like to run the 3 wire unit... it's my understanding that i can just unplug the regulator at the frame rail on my 73... leave that socket unplugged and w/ out any jumper wiring on the pins... then wire up a GM 3 wire with a ground, 12v to the battery 12v, and then an ign wire. sound about right? after reading up on these 10si and 12si alternators, niether specified if they were 1 wire or 3, and i'm not a GM guy, so i can't tell off of site... anyone able to clarify what unit is a confirmed 3 wire, i'm looking for around 60-70amps, nothing super high as all it has to do is run the engine and lights, i doubt i'll even install a radio, and if i do it'll be a radio and 4 speakers, not some amped system w/ subs and whatnot. i searched but came up w/ a bunch of posts relating to putting in a ZX alternator... so if any GM savvy guys can clarify, i'd appriciate it. Wanna swing by the local parts store and know what to ask for so i can get my alternator installed and start figuring out the radiator plumbing. ezzzzzzz
I can't provide the numbers off the top of my head but you will want the3-wire unit. It starts to generate powere at a much lower rpm than the self-exciting 1-wire unit. Also, the ignition wire needs to go through a lamp to indicate charging status (on = no charge). Sometimes a diode is needed to prevent backfeeding the ignition causing run-on when you shut down the engine. I've not done this conversion yet but the swap is supposedly as you have stated. Look at this link for GM alternator info. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml
Guest 305240
Try this web site. It may help. I'm running the 1 wire hookup on mine. The 3 wire is pretty easy to install also. http://www.edmontonzcarclub.com/pages/main.html
