Guest dankinzle Posted January 31, 2001 Share Posted January 31, 2001 Ok, what the heck, I drive my car to school and then after a 4 hour lab, my car will not start at all. I had a popolice officer try to jump the car just to get a parking permit, but I don't think it's the battery. When I turn the ignition, nothing happens at all. The voltage on the meter (which is at full charge) just drops down to zero like it wants to start, but the engine doesn't turn at all. I did notice that the wire that goes from the ignition to tell the starter to turn on is fried a little from touching my header, but there's still copper in the wire, like it's not broken. Kevin Shasteen Posted January 31, 2001 Share Posted January 31, 2001 Any wire w/in the starter/ignition switch which is questionable needs to be rpr'd before a fire under your dash & or carpeting catches fire: all it takes is a battery cable or +12 volt wire to touch against the wrong thing & fire results. That happened to me in a P/Up Truck once & the cause was a bare battery cable that had rubbed on the frame. Most electrical problems are caused from improper grounds. Repair/Replace the questionable wire/cable & after wrapping the rpr w/electrical tape protect it this time w/some kind of covering (plastic flex) of the appropriate size where it wont rub bare again. W/out being there its pretty hard to diagnose; the first place to begin is to rpr any questionable wires. Do that then report back w/the progress. Guest Jason Posted January 31, 2001 Share Posted January 31, 2001 If it's a manual, have you tried push starting? I had a similar problem in my Pathfinder. The voltage would dip down but it wouldn't crank. With a very powerful fully charged battery it sometimes cranked after a few tries. Problem turned out to be the starter in my case. When rewiring the car didn't fix it, I shorted the starter terminals (tip from Myron) and voila, it starts. Ended up being a problem with my alarm system of all things. Piece of junk! I recently finished installing my struts, steering/suspension bushings & brakes all at the same time...absolutely nothing to do w/wiring. Yet, when I hooked the battery cables back all I got was a solenoid like click & then THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA! I thought I had somehow shorted the main circuit somehow, or my stereo had drained the battery down (even tho the battery was disconnected). I cleaned the terminals, spliced in new battery leads; still nothing. Turned out this was just the time the battery chose to go dead on me; wouldnt take a charge or nothing. I gues when the last straw is going to break the camal's back-it's back has to break at some time. Put another battery in & away it went; DID I MENTION I HATE WIRING PROBLEMS(?).
