Guest motorheadeb
Hey I'm curious if there's a simple setup to get a RWD Tranny on a VQ. I have an opportunity to inexpensively purchase a 97 Maxima engine which I am considering as a transplant to my 280zxt. I plan to stand alone and turbocharge (which should be an easy fit with a large single). I've heard about a pathfinder tranny but I'm looking for some facts. Which tranny, clutch, flywheel? Are the tranny's strong if you don't drag launch? Thanks all for any help. Evan
karay240
I'm not 100% sure if the bolt pattern etc is the same, but I'd suggest looking into the VQ35DE trannys. They are used in the 350Z, G35, etc. Nissan does some weird stuff w/ block design w/ FWD and RWD applications (just look @ the SR)
AK-Z
I'm not sure. Isn't the maxima VQ FWD? I haven't heard anything with a VQ and a pathfinder trany swap. If anything it would be like the nissan silvia and the infinity g20. they both have SR20 but the g20 was FWD and lower casing on the engine block was different than its counterpart, so you couldn't convert a g20 SR20 to RWD. mtcookson
I'm pretty sure it will work out. I know for sure that the bolt batterns are the same between the Maxima VQ30DE and the later Maxima VQ35DE (i.e. the 6 speed maxima tranny bolts to the VQ30 maxima). I'm quite sure that the 350Z 6-speed bolts to all of the VQ's but I'll have to double check. Hopefully Nissan made them like they did the VG's. They were put in both fwd and rwd applications and nothing changed between them.
