Straightening front end continued

Recommended Posts

Finally got around to working on the car again. Its been a busy week or so, I've now added a 5hp air compressor with hardpiped lines to the garage, as well as a bunch of shelving and storage. Can't stand not having any room...

To the car, I dropped the front suspension today, noticed I had a bent T-C rod. Spent time cutting around the strut tower, jacking, twisting, cutting etc, and I've got the strut towers within 1/16" of each other now. I've temprarily welded them in place like that. Is 1/16" close enough that an alignment shop can make the necessary adjustments to keep the car aligned?

Are you sure the other measurements are within spec of what's listed in a Mitchell manual? Your local ICBC or experienced shop should be able to give you a photocopy of the other critical dimensions. If you know the one dimension you're checking is the only one that was astray and you didn't create any other differences in your changes I"m certain 1/16" is tolerable. I had my car pulled/majorly repaired this spring from a front end twist and recall >1/16" being accepted industry standard but mine was pulled to at least <=1/16" difference on all measurements.

When I put the frame rail connectors in my 260 I took it to the frame shop and had it pulled to spec before the finish welding and interior went in. The best way to do it in my opinion. Measure twice and cut once as my granfather says!!

I've been measuring in all 3 dimentions, and I am not too worried about those other 2 just yet... because they are darn close.

I think I should probably follow your advice Drew, we have a really good body shop in town, the owner has offered to come look at my car on his own time to give me some pointers. I'll run it by him about getting the new rails tacked in securely and then bringing the car up to his shop to straighten it perfectly. If I am going to spend this much time on these rails, I'd best only do it once!
